Judicial Infrastructure to get hefty facelift in Tanzania

THE Chief Justice, Mr Mohamed Chande Othman, has said the 12.3bn/- injected to the Judiciary for the financial year 2015/2016 will improve infrastructure at the courts and revive construction projects which will extend judicial services closer to the people. Justice Othman said this in Dar es Salaam yesterday while extending his recognition to President John Magufuli for fulfilling his promise after only five days after he made the pledge. “This is actually the first time that the Judiciary is receiving 100 per cent of the allocated budget to undertake its development activities,” said Justice Othman.
President Magufuli should be praised for placing the issue of construction of court infrastructure on top of the agenda as a solution to extend judicial services timely and closer to the people throughout the country. In the previous years, the Judiciary had received a lesser budget compared to the allocated one which has led to failure to undertake intended development projects. “Following the numerous priorities in the government for the year 2012/2013 the set budget was 26.2bn/- but less than 78 per cent was provided, in 2013/2014 the allocated amount was 42.7bn/- but received less than 82 per cent and for the year 2014/2015 the allocated budget was 41.5bn/- but received less than 92 per cent,” he said. The funds will also include the renovation and construction of courts at each level and already had in place drawings of the intended buildings. Constitutional Affairs and Justice Minister, Dr Harrison Mwakyembe noted that for justice to occur, all wards should possess at least one primary court. “The 2015 general elections statistics highlights the existence of 3,959 wards but there are only 957 primary courts nationwide, therefore this is still a big challenge,” noted Dr Mwakyembe. On his part, the Minister of Finance, Dr Philip Mpango, required that the Judiciary should employ the funds in implementing development projects to fulfil the president’s pledges to the people
